Residents of Akure, the Ondo State capital, are counting their losses after a devastating rainstorms struck on Sunday, causing widespread destruction across several parts of the city.
The storms, which began around 4 p.m on Sunday were accompanied by strong winds that lasted nearly an hour, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
The Hope reporter who visited the affected community observed that residents of the areas were yet to recover from the shock and pains of the ugly development.
They were also seen discussing in hush tone the situation and salvaging their remnant belongings, while others stood aimlessly without knowing the next thing to do.
Properties worth millions of naira were said to be destroyed with valuable items in the affected shops and buildings.
Homes, schools, churches, and even the Fanibi Police Station suffered severe damage. Shops and solar-powered streetlights recently installed by the government were also destroyed.
Among the worst-hit areas were Oke Ogba, Fanibi, Lafe, Awule Road, and Agagu Road. Residents in these communities were left in shock, with many seen salvaging what remained of their belongings, while others stood helpless, unsure of their next steps.

One of the victims, a food vendor, Olowe Bosede Rachel, recounted her terrifying experience.
According to her, she and her young daughter narrowly escaped death when the storm suddenly ripped apart her shop while they were still inside. “Everything I own is gone,” she lamented.
The report detailed the extent of the destruction, including the damaged roof of the Fanibi Police Station.
With properties worth millions of naira lost, affected residents are now appealing to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and well-meaning individuals for urgent assistance to help them rebuild their lives.
