Rainy season: FRSC urges regular vehicle checks to prevent crashes

By Bukola Olamona

As the rainy season intensifies, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ondo State Command, has issued a stern warning to motorists over the dangers of using vehicles with faulty wipers, defective brakes, and poor lighting systems.

The Sector Commander, Dr. Samuel Ibitoye, gave the caution while fielding questions from journalists in Akure, stressing that such vehicle deficiencies contribute significantly to accidents during wet weather.

According to him, motorists must prioritise regular maintenance to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy before setting out, particularly during this season of reduced visibility and slippery roads.

“As the rains begin, it’s crucial that motorists check their vehicles thoroughly before setting out.” “A faulty wiper, bad brake, or broken headlamps can make the difference between life and death on slippery roads, Ibitoye said.”

He emphasised that road safety during the rainy season is a shared responsibility, urging drivers to ensure that their wipers are in good working condition, mirrors are not cracked or missing, headlamps and rear lights are functional, and brakes are responsive.

To curb the spate of road crashes, Ibitoye revealed that the command had stepped up its public enlightenment campaigns and embarked on free vehicle safety checks across major routes in the state.

“Our officers are on the roads daily, warning drivers and checking vehicles. We are doing everything possible to achieve zero crashes during this rainy season,” he said.

The sector commander also used the occasion to caution young and inexperienced drivers against reckless driving, describing youthful exuberance as a major risk factor in road traffic incidents.

“Drivers should not allow youthful exuberance to control how they behave behind the wheel. “Obey traffic rules, avoid overspeeding, and remember that every life on the road matters.”

He further charged officers and men of the command to be professional, disciplined, and committed to their duties while ensuring that motorists adhere strictly to safety regulations.

Ibitoye called, on all road users to be safety-conscious and responsible throughout the rainy season and beyond.
