Register your members to forestall crisis, miners urged
From Fisayo Akinduro, Osogbo
The Osun state government has urged miners operating in the state to register in order to forestall the attendant crises and crimes.
The State Governor, Gboyega Oyetola disclosed this during a security meeting with Ife/Ilesa zone stakeholders in Ilesa on Tuesday.
Oyetola while appreciating the good people of the zone for their support lauded the heads of the respective segments of the zone for mobilizing and galvanizing their people to achieve these laudable ends.
He stressed that Ife-Ilesa zone is home to huge mineral deposits, which will hugely increase and improve the prosperity of the people, noting that as experiences of mining-rich communities show, the zone will naturally witness security challenges that accompany mining activities.
The governor said the meeting was intended to afford everyone the opportunity to strategize and address the challenges and live in peace with our residents and neighbours.
He said government has elicited the support and pledge of meat sellers to make the security campaign a success. “Traditional rulers and landowners must keep a tab on activities going on in their domain and know when strangers enter their communities.”
Top traditional rulers in the state, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi and Owa Adekunle Aromolaran asked the state government to partner with traditional rulers to checkmate illegal mining among other security challenges battling the state.
They asked residents of the state to be watchful and vigilant and also charged state government to protect the people of the state from kidnappings and other criminal activities.
Also speaking, the Chairman Committee for Fulani/Bororo and Cow dealers in the state, Hon. Togun Oguntola urged the state government to partner with neighbouring state to have a joint military patrol on the highways.
