Regular exercise, panacea to ill health – expert

Regular body exercise has been described as a preventive measure to most common illnesses that can clampdown  trending non curable diseases.

A US based health manager who specializes in Orthopaedic and Neuro surgical Rehabilitation, Mrs Moji Akeredolu stated this while speaking on the “economic importance of body Exercise in an interview with The Hope.

Mrs Akeredolu who is also the Managing Director of Tonike Integrated, Gymnasium Cuz physiotherapy outfit in Oba-Ile, Akure maintained that most diseases common with people, both old and young are preventable by regular exercise under a professional guide.

She said exercise should not be seen as a luxury or  for the rich but  as a lifestyle.

She mentioned those health problems to include hypertension, high blood pressure, arthritis, rheumatism, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, heart, kidney and other endocrine problems, saying exercise can prevent and clamp down their level of potency.

“I want people to know that exercise is not luxury, it is needed by both young and old, it should be in their character. It should not be seen as the thing of the rich alone but should be part of routine in life.

“It is only here that we don’t take much cognizance of our health, in the US, exercise is a lifestyle. People go to gym everyday. This helps them a lot.

“Most diseases are preventable if people take caution, eat right and do the right exercise. They don’t have to wait until they are sick and need to see a doctor before they go to the gym”, he said.

The Health manager who expressed displeasure over how this generation despise walking, said incidents of blood pressure and the likes were not common in those days as old men trecked miles to markets and farms.

She said 30 minutes to one hour brisk walk is very essential everyday for all and sundry to shed some weight and keep the body figure in shape.

“Exercise to the body is like when you service your vehicle. If you don’t service your car, after a while it will crash but if you do, the car would be back to itself. The same thing is with our body because it is like a  machine that needs regular servicing”.

Mrs Akeredolu equally highlighted some other economic values that exercise can add to the people  to include profitable engagement, reduction in unemployment, saying with these  crime among other social vices youths are mostly involved in can be curbed.
