By Adedotun Ajayi

The Governor of Ondo State, Dr Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the families and dependents of fallen heroes who paid the ultimate sacrifice for national peace and unity.

Dr Aiyedatiwa made the pledge during a Holy Service at the Government House Chapel in Alagbaka, Akure, on Sunday, to mark the 2025 Armed Forces Remembrance Day.

The occasion also doubled as a thanksgiving service to celebrate his 60th birthday.

In his address, the governor reflected on the solemnity of the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, describing it as a poignant moment to honour the sacrifices of military personnel who lost their lives in service to the nation.

“This day is a solemn reminder of the selfless service of our fallen heroes who paid the ultimate price for the unity and peace of our nation,” he said.

“As we reflect on their sacrifices, we must extend our deepest gratitude to their families and loved ones who continue to bear the weight of their loss. Today’s service is dedicated to their memory and the ideals they stood for.”

Governor Aiyedatiwa called on citizens to actively support veterans, widows, and dependents of fallen heroes, particularly through contributions to the Nigerian Legion’s Emblem Appeal Fund, which is dedicated to the welfare of ex-servicemen and their families.

“Our prayers must be matched with tangible actions. I encourage everyone to support our veterans and their families, particularly those who are physically challenged. By donating generously and extending a hand of fellowship, we can uphold their legacy and foster a spirit of inclusivity and support,” he added.

The governor also expressed gratitude to God for His faithfulness, as the day marked his milestone 60th birthday. Reflecting on his leadership journey, he thanked the people of Ondo State for their trust and support during the 2024 gubernatorial election, which secured his second term in office.

“No one receives anything except it is given by God. The victory at the polls was not just a testament to the will of the people but a divine mandate. I am deeply grateful for this privilege and remain committed to serving the people of Ondo State with integrity and dedication,” he noted.

Dr Aiyedatiwa commended the professionalism of security agencies, including the Amotekun Corps, during the 2024 election and urged their continued cooperation as the state prepares for the forthcoming local government council elections.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to ensure their children are not exploited by desperate political actors, urging all to maintain peace during the polls.

During the service, the governor paid tribute to the late Hon Temitayo Oluwatuyi, the immediate past Secretary to the State Government, describing him as a loyal and selfless leader. A minute of silence was observed in his honour.

In his sermon, Bishop Felix Adejumo, General Overseer of Agape Church, centred his message on gratitude and faithfulness, drawing from Psalm 89:1 and Psalm 34:1-4.

He urged the congregation to reflect on God’s enduring love and faithfulness in their personal and leadership journeys.

The Bishop also highlighted the courage and sacrifices of the armed forces, encouraging the congregation to remain steadfast in their trust in God, who delivers and protects in uncertain times.
