A night of solemn reflections and heartfelt tributes was held in honour of the late former Secretary to the Ondo State Government (SSG), Hon. Tayo Oluwatuyi, as leaders, family members, and associates gathered to celebrate his legacy.
Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, represented by his deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, described Oluwatuyi as a selfless and dedicated public servant whose contributions to the development of Ondo State will be remembered for generations.
Speaking at the event, held on Thursday at Akure City Hall, Aiyedatiwa extolled the late SSG’s wisdom, leadership, and unwavering commitment to good governance.
Reflecting on the inevitability of death, the governor remarked, “Death is a debt we all must pay. We are only here for a moment, and what truly matters is the legacy we leave behind. Listening to the heartfelt tributes shared today, one thing is clear, Tayo Oluwatuyi was a good man, an extraordinary individual whose life touched many and left an indelible mark on Ondo State.”
He emphasised that Oluwatuyi’s leadership was defined by humility and service, adding, “He was never driven by personal gain but by a genuine desire to make a difference.” He extended his condolences to the family, urging them to take solace in the profound impact of his life.
Chief of Staff and Chairman of the Funeral Planning Committee, Prince Segun Omojuwa, also paid tribute to the late Oluwatuyi, describing him as “a man of remarkable legacy and purpose, whose contributions to society were profound.” He lauded his dedication as a father, husband, and leader, affirming that “the true measure of a man is not in his wealth but in the legacy he leaves behind.”
Otunba Wale Akinlosotu, a former Commissioner for Information, recalled Oluwatuyi’s leadership qualities, particularly during his tenure as Chairman of Akure South Local Government, and later as a two-time Commissioner and SSG. “He performed exceptionally well, earning the admiration of many. It was no surprise that he went on to serve in higher capacities,” he said.
Kolawole Gbadamosi, a childhood friend and classmate from Oyemekun Grammar School, expressed sorrow at the loss of “one of our most distinguished alumni.” He recounted Oluwatuyi’s academic brilliance, leadership qualities, and achievements in sports, adding, “His legacy of excellence and service will forever be remembered.”
Close associate, Tola Olowe reflected on Oluwatuyi’s humility and generosity, noting his reluctance to seek positions of power despite his exceptional leadership qualities. “His generosity, wisdom, and ability to bring people together made him an invaluable leader,” he said.
Akure South Chairman-elect, Gbenga Fasua, described Oluwatuyi as “a father figure to the Akure people,” who was always ready to defend and support his community. “If tears could bring you back, the people of Akure have wept enough to do so,” he said.
Dr. Ayo Ikusemiju, who worked closely with Oluwatuyi in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, commended his work ethic, describing him as “a boss like no other, firm yet fair, demanding excellence from everyone who worked under him.”
The Chairman of the APC Central Senatorial District, Festus Aregbesola, hailed Oluwatuyi as “a true party man” who played a crucial role in uniting members within the APC in Akure South. “The party has lost a great leader, and his influence will be greatly missed,” he added.
A close friend, Rasheed Ojuolape, spoke with deep emotion about the personal loss, stating, “Losing him is like losing a part of myself. The world feels emptier without him.”
Prince Dokun Adekoye from Oyo State highlighted Oluwatuyi’s strong ties beyond Ondo, describing Ibadan as his second home. “He was a man of goodwill, a friend to all, and someone who built bridges across states,” he noted.
Speaking on behalf of the immediate family, Mrs. Yetunde Armstrong, Oluwatuyi’s daughter, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love, describing her father as “a man of honour, integrity, and compassion.”
She emphasised that while his absence left a void, he had left behind “a priceless legacy of a good name, a reputation built on service, honesty, and unwavering commitment to uplifting others.”
The night of tributes was a testament to the life and impact of the late Oluwatuyi, as voices from different spheres echoed his contributions, leadership, and enduring legacy.
