Residents of Ikare and Arigidi Akoko, in Akoko area of Ondo State, have sent a ‘save our souls’, (SOS), to the three tiers of government and all concerned authorities in the country, over reckless driving by motorists and commercial motorcyclists on the dualised Ikare township road and Ikare to Agbaluku section of Ajowa Akoko road.
According to them, the incessant accidents on the roads have been causing untimely deaths.
A woman leader in Ikare Akoko and an entrepreneur, Alhaja Kafilat Obajana, expressed worries over excessive speed by drivers on Ikare road, particularly the northern bond vehicles while okada riders have not been following rules, regulations and traffic codes of conduct.
A resident of Arigidi Akoko, Mr Ibrahim Ajayi, who also corroborated the issue of excessive speeding on the part of motorists even within the two towns of Arigidi and Ikare, said the situation is getting worrisome by the day.
Ajayi urged the Ikare Unit of the Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, to organise another seminar on how to use the dualised road for motorists and commercial motorcyclists in the area, now that the Ember months are around.
In his reaction, the Ikare Unit Commander of FRSC, Mr Ropo Alabi, said that his unit has embarked on various sensitization efforts in mosques, churches, market places, schools and motor parks on road safety.
Alabi reiterated that ember months are not killer months as erroneously believed by people.
“ I want to caution drivers against night journey, using bad ‘Tokunbo Tyres’ and the use of unserviceable vehicles. Taking to all of these pieces of advice will reduce accidents on our roads,” he advised.
