Residents decry offensive stench at Okitipupa main market

Residents of Okitipupa, the headquarters of Okitipupa Local Government Area, have raised the alarm over a persistent foul odour emanating from the Okitipupa Main Market, particularly in the morning hours.

The offensive smell is said to originate from the section where fresh fish and catfish are sold at the market’s frontage, leaving traders and shoppers in discomfort.
Weekend Hope findings revealed that the stench, which has been a recurring issue, stems from the indiscriminate disposal of fish waste and stagnant wastewater around the market.
Residents fear that if urgent action is not taken, the unhygienic condition could lead to a public health crisis, including outbreaks of diseases linked to poor sanitation.
A resident, Mr Sola Akindele, who spoke with Weekend Hope correspondent, lamented the unpleasant situation, stressing the need for market traders to be educated on proper waste disposal practices.
According to him, maintaining a clean environment would not only safeguard public health but also enhance business activities in the market.
Health experts have also raised concerns, warning that prolonged exposure to such unhygienic conditions could result in respiratory infections, food contamination, and other serious health risks.
They urged the local government and environmental agencies to enforce sanitation regulations and provide adequate waste management facilities to curb the menace.
Some residents suggested that market authorities introduce routine cleaning schedules and enforce strict hygiene measures.
They also called on the local government to launch an awareness campaign to educate traders on proper sanitation and the dangers of environmental pollution.
Concerned community members have now called on the authorities to intervene swiftly to restore hygiene and ensure the well-being of all residents.
