Retired soldier nabbed over possession of gun, Indian hemp

Operatives of the Special Anti-Kidnapping Squad of Ondo State Police Command yesterday apprehended a retired sergeant in the Nigerian Army for unlawful possession of a pistol with five live ammunition and Indian hemp.
Police sources said the sergeant was intercepted along Ore – Lagos expressway by policemen on routine patrol and surveillance.
The source said the suspect attempted to escape with his vehicle but was given a hot chase by the police before he was later arrested.
When his vehicle was searched, a pistol, loaded with five rounds of ammunition and Indian hemp were recovered from him.
It was gather that the suspect during interrogation confessed to be an ex-military personnel and that he voluntarily retired from the Nigerian Army in 2019.
He told the police that he picked the rifle during an operation in his service year in the North East zone of the country, adding that he was not using the gun for any criminal activity.
A police source who confirmed the arrest of the suspect said some military officers in the state have identified him to be one of them and that since he claimed to have retired voluntarily from the service he suppose to have submitted his gun and identity card.
The suspect, according to the police, would be charged to court soon after investigation is concluded.
