Rice dealer in court over fraud

A 42-year-old rice dealer, Adesanmi Adeyera, has been arraigned before an Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding his customer of 100 bags of rice worth N2million.
The accused person whose address was not provided in court, is facing a charge of fraud, to which he pleaded not guilty.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Elijah Adesina, told the court that the accused person committed the offence on June 20 around 5:30 p.m. at Oja-Tuntun in Ile-Ife.
He said that the accused person fraudulently obtained 100 bags of rice from the complainant, Mr Oyetoro Omolade.
The prosecutor said that the accused person promised that he would pay Omolade within five days; a representation he knew was false.
He said the accused person converted the N2million to his personal use after selling the rice.
The offence committed contravened Sections 390(9) and 419 of the Criminal Law of Osun, 2002.
The defence counsel, Mr Ola Ibrahim, prayed the court to grant bail to his client in most liberal terms, promising that he would not jump bail.
The Magistrate, Mr Adedotun Ayeni, granted the accused person bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
He ordered that the sureties must swear to affidavit of means and must be residing within the court’s jurisdiction.
He added that one of the sureties must show evidence of three years’ tax payment to Osun Government.
The case was adjourned till September 20 for mention.
