S/West HoS meeting: Akeredolu harps on digitalisation of public service

The Governor of Ondo State, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, has emphasised the need for the public service in the South-West region to migrate to full digitalisation of its activities.

Akeredolu who stressed that this would make room for smarter, faster, more effective work process and better service delivery, further said that the public service must become receptive to global best practices.

Akeredolu spoke on Thursday while declaring open the 2022 South-West Heads of Service Strategic Meeting, held at the International Culture and Events Centre (The Dome), Akure. The theme of the event is, “Rethinking Civil Service in a Digital World”.

The meeting hosted by the State Head of Service, Pastor Niran Adeyemo,mni, was attended by Heads of Service of Ekiti, Osun, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos States, among other top bureaucrats.

At the meeting, Governor Akeredolu who was represented by his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, specifically acknowledged the great job the public service is doing in the South-West, saying  “Assessing it from our perspective of the Ondo State Bureaucracy, I can say that the public service in the Southwest is considerably meeting its time-tested constitutional roles” even though there is need for improvement, particularly on work process and ethical values.

He stressed that technology must be fully deployed to generate more resources, identify and block loopholes and optimise service delivery in the respective bureaucracies in the South-West Geo-Political Zone.

Akeredolu explained that the old Western State, now South-West Geo-Political Zone, has a history of towering Public Service in the whole of Nigeria, noting It is refreshing to see that a conscious effort is being made to re-enact and surpass the glorious era of the past.

Akeredolu solicited the continued support and cooperation of the bureaucrats to enable them deliver effectively and efficiently on their election promises for the overall pacesetting socio-economic development of the Region.

Earlier, the host and Ondo State Head of Service, Pastor Niran Adeyemo, disclosed that the summit has been a veritable tool for peer review and learning platform for exchange of ideas in best practices in Public Service and Human Resource Management, among others.

Adeyemo said the time has come for the Public Service to shed the toga of a mere docile machinery of government, pushing subject files back and forth, adding that the Service must leverage on technology in order to be more innovative, resourceful and proactive, to assist the political authorities meet their goals of responsible and responsive governance.

He appreciated his colleagues, Heads of Service across the southwest, past Heads of Service, DG DAWN Commission and other delegates for their support and presence at the meeting.
