Sales girls bag 4 years in jail over N1.7m fraud

An Akure Magistrate Court has sentenced two sales girls, Ige Omowumi, 25 and Ronke Faith, 25, to four years imprisonment with an option of N100, 000 fine for fraudulently converting their employer’s N1,700million to their personal use.
In addition to the jail term, the trial Magistrate, Charity Adeyanju, ordered the convicts to pay the sum of N850,000 each as compensation to the complainant.
The convicts were sales clerks of one Funke Akinbinu, at her shop, Trendtrackers Emporium Boutique located at No 12, Akure Shopping mall, in the Akure Magisterial District.
The prosecution said they conspired to commit the offence in August 7, 2017 at about 9:00am, contrary to 383 and punishable under sections 516, 390(b), of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Volume 1, Laws of Óndo State Nigeria, 2006.
However, the convicts pleaded not guilty to the charges, preferred against them.
But the court found them guilty based on the testimonies of witnesses presented by the prosecution and the defence.
The prosecutor, Inspector Uloh Goodluck, while presenting the facts of the matter before the court , said the two convicts were sales clerks to the complainant, Funke Akinbinu.
Uloh, said the complainant travelled abroad in August 7, 2017 and returned in September 6, 2017.
According to him, the convicts had converted all the proceeds of the sales made in the absence of their employer into their personal use.
The prosecutor, therefore, urged the court to sentence them accordingly.
The court found them guilty of the offence and consequently handed down the jail term, as a deterrent to others.
Magistrate Adeyanju said the sentence should run concurrently.
