Sales Rep in court over 210 bags of rice theft

A 19-year-old sales rep, Monday Anagor, has been arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court sitting in Oke-Eda for allegedly stealing 210 bags of rice worth N5.6million.

The police prosecutor, Wada Simon told the court that the defendant committed the offence sometime in June 2021 at about 08.00am at Orita guru, Oba Adesida Market Akure in the Akure Magisterial District.

He said that the defendant being a sales rep, stole 210 bags of rice valued at N5.6million, property of Chika Chidima.

Anagor was allegedly to have stolen 210 bags of rice which was entrusted to him by his boss.

Simon said the offences was punishable under sections 390 (8) of Criminal Code Law, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

The charge read, That you Anagor on Monday ‘m’ sometime June 2021 at about 08.00am at Orita guru, Oba Adesida Market Akure in the Akure Magisterial District, did steal 210 bags of rice valued Five Million, Six Hundred and Seventy Thousand Naira (N5,670,000.00) which had been entrusted to you by your boss Chika Chidima and thereby committed an offence, contrary to and punishable under Section 390(8)b of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria 2006.

However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor prayed the court to adjourn the case to enable him present the  witnesses and prepare them for trial.

The defendant counsel Ola Adedire, prayed the court to admit her client to bail in most liberal terms.

She argued that the defendant presumed innocent in the eyes of the Law until proven guilty as, charged by a competent court of the land.

She said the defendant would not jump bail if his application is granted, promising that the defendant would provide credible and reliable surety.

Magistrate Damilola Sekoni in his ruling, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N2million with two sureties in like sum.

He added that the sureties must provide tax clearance for the current year and live in court jurisdiction, adding that the passport sized photograph  of the sureties and the defendant must be taken.

He adjourned the matter till September 29, 2022, for definite hearing.
