Sanitation: ODSG arrests 96

For violating the Ondo State Environmental Sanitation Law, 96 people were arrested yesterday at various locations in Akure the state capital.

According to report, the environmental team which was led by the Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Sunday Akinwalire arrested  residents who refused to abide by the law as it enforced restriction of movement.

At the Adegbemile axis of Akure, no fewer than 33 cars, eight trucks, 12 buses and  trailers were grounded till the expiration of the exercise.

Some of those restricted include residents who had various occasions to attend while some claimed to be travelling to other towns in the country.

Although, various entrance examinations took place on the same day, pupils and students alongside their parents were not resricted in order to allow them sit for the exams.

Speaking shortly with The Hope after the exercise, Akinwalire commended the state Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu for putting measures in place to ensure cleanliness and safety of both residents and property in the state.

He noted that even though NIMET predicted that the state would be among states to be affected by flooding in 2022, the state didn’t experience it much due to government’s commitment.

He said that the state is set to enforce the exercise law on residents as from the next edition of the monthly exercise, commending the team for a job well done.

He hinted that a new committee on effective waste management has been put in place for rbetter performance, adding that its report will be acted upon accordingly for better implementation.

He stressed the need for stakeholders to support government in the area of environmental cleanliness to achieve a healthy society in the state saying, “people should clean their environment at all time and not just on sanitation days.”

Chairman, Committee on Waste, Mr. Kehinde Badejo stressed the need for collaboration between the waste committees in achieving a cleaner state.

According to him, the lasting solution to waste is disposition of residents to the environment, saying “until we have an attitudinal change, we won’t get anything. We should all ensure proper waste disposal.”

Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Mr. Bunmi Alade noted that residents were yet to imbibe the sanitation culture urging them to carry out sanitation exercise with passion.
