Scavenger bags one year imprisonment over theft

An 18-year-old scavenger, Sunday Peter, has been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment by an Akure Chief Magistrates’ Court, for stealing generator worth N150,000.

The convict committed the offence on July 28, 2023 at about 10:00pm at Car Street, in Akure metropolis..

The prosecutor, Inspector Abayomi Jejeniwa, earlier told the court that the convict stole one Elepaq Generator valued at N150,000, belonging to one Olusola Oluwadare, without his consent.

According to the prosecution, the offence contravened Sections 383 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 37 Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.

He pleaded guilty to the charge leveled against him.

Following his guilty plea, the prosecutor urged the court to sentence him accordingly.

The Chief Magistrate, S.O Adedapo, sentenced the convict to 12 months imprisonment with an option of N50,000, fine, payable to the government, while he should also pay N20,000 to the complainant.

The convict could not meet the bail conditions and was thereafter sentenced to one year imprisonment.
