Scavenger docked for allegedly stealing church’s property

A scavenger, Onyebuchi Chinoso, has been arraigned before a Magistrates’ Court in Akure, for alleged burglary and theft.
The prosecution led by state counsel, N.J. Osele, informed the court that the defendant committed the offence on January 17, 2025, around 1:15 p.m. at Bejide Street, Alagbaka, Akure.
Chinoso was accused of breaking into Christ Apostolic Church, Oke-Ayo Parish Church and allegedly stole five window frames worth N358,000, property of the church.
Osele said the offence contravened Sections 383 and 390(9) and is punishable under Section 415 of the Criminal Code, Cap 37, Vol. 1, Laws of Ondo State, 2006.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecuting counsel informed the court of his intention to call two witnesses. He requested an adjournment to review the case file and prepare for trial.
Defence counsel, Onu, applied for bail on liberal terms, assuring the court that credible sureties would be provided.
In his ruling, Magistrate Damilola Sekoni granted Chinoso bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned till February 24, 2025, for further hearing.
