Second term: Reactions trail Oyebanji’s endorsement

By Precious Owolabi, Ado Ekiti

Reactions have trailed the endorsement of Governor Biodun Oyebanji for a second term in office by politicians, trade unions, traditional rulers, and other notable groups in Ekiti State.

In recent months, Governor Oyebanji’s endorsement for a second term has dominated discussions and shaped the political landscape of Ekiti State.

Governor Biodun Oyebanji assumed office on October 16, 2022, under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) after defeating candidates from other political parties.

Currently, prominent political leaders, including former Governor Ayodele Fayose of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), former Governor Segun Oni of the Social Democratic Party (SDP); Ekiti’s first civilian governor, Otunba Niyi Adebayo, and the immediate past governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, have declared their support for Oyebanji’s re-election bid.

Speaking on the endorsements, the immediate past Chairman of IPAC and former governorship candidate in Ekiti State, Mr. Ifedayo Iyaniwura, described the development as proof that Governor Oyebanji has won the hearts of the people through his outstanding performance in various sectors.

Iyaniwura stated that Oyebanji is a passionate leader with a clear vision for the state’s progress.

He described him as a governor who blends native intelligence with bureaucratic excellence and remains connected to the masses.

“He is an exposed technocrat with a proven track record of commitment to the welfare of Ekiti people and infrastructural development,” he added.

Similarly, the Alahun of Ahun-Ekiti in Efon Local Government area, Oba Jacob Adelowo Omole, and the Ochidoma of the Idoma people living in Ekiti State, Oyigocho Otache, noted that such widespread endorsements are unprecedented in the state’s history.

They attributed it to Oyebanji’s leadership style, developmental strategies, and humility.

The traditional ruler emphasised that the governor had fulfilled his campaign promises by constructing roads, providing electricity, renovating hospitals, settling outstanding pension arrears, and ensuring a robust welfare package for civil servants and residents.

He pledged continued support for Oyebanji’s political future while urging him to increase monthly allocations to traditional rulers and extend infrastructural projects to more communities.

In his remarks, Senator Babafemi Ojudu commended Oyebanji’s achievements, particularly his efforts in unifying party leaders and prioritising human empowerment through initiatives like the Adire Ekiti Hub, which has transformed the lives of many citizens.

“This is the first time since 2003 that people can sleep with both eyes closed without fear. The governor is a unifier—no politically motivated killings under his leadership.”
