Security threats: Police urge Osun Govt to halt LG elections

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has urged the Osun State Government to put an immediate hold on the forthcoming Local Government elections, citing credible intelligence indicating a significant threat to security.

In a statement issued on Friday by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police warned that conducting the polls under the prevailing volatile atmosphere could trigger widespread unrest, posing grave risks to lives and property.

According to the statement, intelligence gathered from joint security operations suggests that various factions, including political actors and interest groups, are mobilising to instigate violence, disrupt public peace, and undermine the democratic process.

“Given the imminent threat to security, the NPF strongly advises the Osun State Government to suspend the planned elections forthwith in the interest of public safety and national stability,” Adejobi stated.

The police further disclosed that security assessments indicate the situation, if not properly managed, could spiral into large-scale disturbances.

“While the Force, in collaboration with other security agencies, remains fully prepared to forestall any breakdown of law and order, suspending the election is considered the most prudent course of action to prevent unnecessary confrontations and protect democracy,” the statement noted.

Beyond security concerns, the police also referenced a legal clarification provided by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. The statement pointed to a Court of Appeal ruling delivered on 22nd February 2025, which effectively overturned an earlier decision of the Federal High Court, raising legal uncertainties over the conduct of the elections.

“In light of the heightened security threats and existing legal complexities, the Nigeria Police Force advises the Osun State Government to reconsider and suspend the planned elections without further delay,” the statement added.

The NPF reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to ensuring peace, safeguarding lives and property, and upholding democratic tenets in line with the law.

The police also appealed to all stakeholders, including political parties, to exercise restraint and prioritise the safety and well-being of citizens during this critical period.
