Self-styled monarch, others arrested over illegal installation in Ondo

By Bukola Olamona

The Ondo State Police Command has apprehended a man, Adekolajo Aladeseyi, who is accused of illegally crowning himself as the Olujare of Ijare, a town located in the Ifedore Local Government Area of the state. Aladeseyi’s self-proclamation as the monarch has sparked controversy, as it was made without the consent or approval of the royal family and kingmakers in the community.

Along with Aladeseyi, four other individuals believed to be involved in the unauthorised installation process were also arrested.

The controversial act is said to have been carried out despite opposition from key figures in the community who are responsible for the selection of the town’s monarch.

The Olujare stool, which is a prestigious first-class traditional title, became vacant four years ago after the passing of Oba Adebamigbe Oluwagbemigun, Kokotiri II.

Since then, the community has awaited the selection of a new ruler, but the process has been marred by disputes and claims of irregularities.

Confirming the arrests, the state Commissioner of Police, Olutokunbo Afolabi, disclosed that the suspects were apprehended on the orders of the state government.

Afolabi emphasised that the installation ceremony carried out by Aladeseyi did not receive legal recognition from either the local government or state authorities.

“This action was necessary to maintain peace and prevent a potential breakdown of law and order in the community,” Afolabi explained.

“The suspects’ conduct was unlawful, and their actions could have resulted in violence.”

The Commissioner further stated that the suspects would face charges in court once investigations are concluded.

In the wake of the incident, some members of the royal family and kingmakers in Ijare have distanced themselves from the self-styled monarch’s installation, asserting that the proper procedures were not followed.

They made it clear that they had no involvement in the selection or approval of Aladeseyi as the new Olujare.

As investigations continue, the police have reassured the public that every step will be taken to ensure the proper and lawful appointment of a new traditional ruler for the community.
