Senator Zam urges Govt to end herders- community crisis

By: Henry Iyorkase, Makurdi

The Senator representing Benue North West Senatorial District, Dr. Titus Zam, has raised alarm over renewed killings in Gwer-West, Benue State.

Senator Zam lamented that suspected Fulani herdsmen reportedly stormed several communities on Monday, killing no fewer than 20 inhabitants.

He also stated that the attackers set houses ablaze and carted away farm produce, including yams and maize, in large quantities.

In a statement made available to The Hope on Tuesday in Makurdi, the senator’s media aide decried the spate of genocide againsYt innocent communities.

The senator urged Governor Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia to take swift action in addressing the herders’ attacks, which have resulted in widespread destruction and loss of lives.

He emphasized that the recurring violence has been a major source of concern for the people.

Dr. Zam, a native of the affected area, noted that there seems to be no end in sight to the persistent crisis, which has plagued his constituency since 2011. He explained that while efforts had been made to curb the menace, including assistance from law enforcement agencies, no lasting solution has been found.

The senator further stressed that the necessary legal frameworks to tackle insecurity have been put in place but urged the state government to intensify efforts in finding a permanent solution to the crisis.

Meanwhile, a group under the auspices of Good Governance Initiative has rejected the proposed ranching of Fulani cattle in the state.

The group’s leader, Hon. John Aspenugwan, argued that Benue lacks sufficient land to accommodate Fulani herders.

He insisted that with the state’s population exceeding 5 million, there is no available space to allocate to outsiders.
