By Kehinde Oluwatayo
In its bid to prepare farmers in the state for dry season farming, the Ondo State Agricultural Commodities Association (OSACA) has disclosed its intention to organise a sensitisation programme in November ahead of the season.
Chairman of OSACA in the state, Mr Gbenga Obaweya made the disclosure while speaking with The Hope in Akure.
Obaweya who said it is an effort to make dry season compensation for the losses that farmers experienced this year due to the pattern of rainfall.
According to him, the rainfall pattern brought a lot of losses to the farmers adding that the pattern of rain between August and September traditionally should be a combination of rain and sunshine but rain still falls almost every day in October.
Aside from the effect of the rain on the farm produce, inaccessibility of farm roads is another major challenge being confronted by farmers during rainy season according to Obaweya.
The chairman of the umbrella body of farmers in the state who said some farmers were discouraged because of their experiences disclosed that some were already bracing up for dry season farming.
According to him, associations like tomato farmers and some individuals were already digging well for irrigation as against the traditional closeness to river or relying on water from dam.
He said the umbrella body will roll out jingles on radio and other media outlets to enlighten farmers and prepare them for dry season farming.
He advised farmers not to give up because of the challenges they are facing but think outside the box so that they can walk around their problems.
