Tragedy struck early Thursday along the Akure-Owo Expressway, as a tipper truck collided with a commercial vehicle conveying traders to Ogbese Market, killing seven people on the spot.
The fatal crash occurred at Bolorunduro, leaving several others injured and causing panic among residents and motorists along the busy route.
Emergency responders, including personnel from the Nigeria Police, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), swiftly arrived at the scene to secure the area, control traffic and commence investigation into the cause of the accident.
Shortly after the incident, the Special Assistant to the Ondo State Governor on Emergency Response, Hon. (Prince) Wellington Oriade Adebawo, visited the scene to oversee the evacuation of victims and ensure immediate medical attention for the injured.
A visibly saddened Adebawo decried the rising cases of accidents involving heavy-duty trucks across the state.
He also expressed displeasure over how some victims were left unattended before rescue teams arrived, stressing that swift intervention could have saved more lives.
“The Ondo State Government remains committed to the safety and well-being of its people. I urge everyone to assist accident victims promptly while awaiting emergency responders,” Adebawo said.
He commended the combined efforts of security and rescue agencies at the scene and called for stronger collaboration among them.
He further advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and to obey traffic regulations to prevent future tragedies.
