It was a tumultuous joy at the Igbatoro headquarters of the Ondo State Police Command yesterday as 35 female sex workers were released from police custody with a warning to sin no more.
The prostitutes who were raided from brothels and hotels in Akure last weekend went home without parting with money on the orders of the State Commissioner of Police, Mr Ggenga Adeyanju.
The Hope Metro learnt that the magnanimity of the police boss came on the heels of pleading from managers and owners of the hotels where they were picked for their release.
Unconfirmed report told The Hope Metro that pressure mounted by the managers due to a sharp drop in sales due to the absence of the prostitutes led to their freedom.
Many of the sex workers openly hugged one another and showered praises on the CP for not allowing the police to extort money under the guise of bail from them.
A competent police officer who confirmed the development said “ it is our oga that gave order that they should be released unconditionally and we have no choice than to obey the order and directive of our boss .
“We have allowed them to go based on the order and directive of our boss. We arrested them in some brothels operating in Akure metropolis during a raid of some criminal hideouts, flash points and unidentified areas where they were engaging their sex business and also constituting public nuisance and security threats in the state”.
According to him the state police command has taken raiding of suspected and unidentified hideouts and flash points across the state as one of security measures taken to prevent and detect crime in the state .
While saying the police will continue to check crime and criminality happening in the state urged the general public to always assist the police with adequate and useful information that will help in reducing crime to the bearest minimum in the state.
However, efforts to speak to one of the managers of a brothel in Akure proved abortive as neither him or his clients were ready to speak to the metro.
