Food is a basic need of human. In fact, it is the number one reason people work, since no one can live without food for a long time. Food nourishes the body; determines how healthy an individual can be. It provides energy and builds blocks for the body to grow and function well. So, the importance of food to human existence cannot be overemphasised.

However, consuming the wrong food can result in ill health and stunted growth, among others.

Foodstuffs can be purchased in the traditional market, open market, supermarket and can be ordered online. In shopping for foodstuffs, prioritise freshness, quality and price. The following tips can help you make informed decisions while shopping for foodstuff.

1. Where to buy

The type of foodstuff you want to buy will determine where you will buy from. When you are buying grains or spices, which may not necessarily need freshness, you can buy anywhere. But when you are shopping for vegetables, pepper, tomatoes, fruits, fish, you need to consider freshness which  is better in traditional or local market because you are likely to buy directly from producers.

2. Quality

Whenever you are shopping for food stuff, think of quality. Eating quality foodstuffs will help you get the right nutrients. So, look critically to ensure what you are buying is of good quality.

3. Buy in bulk

You get better deals when purchasing larger quantities, especially for grains, tubers and spices. When buying in bulk, think of foodstuffs that can be preserved to avoid getting spoilt.

4.Shop early in the morning:  Vendors sell fresher produce in the morning and are more likely to sell at a cheaper rate. But when you are buying from a retailer, be ready to buy at a higher price because he is out to make profit and you may not get it fresh.

5. Compare prices

Prices vary from market to market; so check different sellers before buying. Also, there are markets where particular foodstuff is cheaper.

6. Buy during harvest season: Foodstuffs like tomatoes and yams are cheaper when they are in season. During the harvest season, you can buy larger quantities and preserve.

You can visit the supermarket If you prefer clean, packaged or imported food items. While shopping online will save time and gives convenience, there is nothing you can not get from the supermarket or shop for online.

Final tips

Shopping for foodstuffs can be fun and affordable if you know where to go and how to buy wisely. Whether you are visiting the bustling local markets, shopping in supermarkets, or ordering online, always prioritise freshness, quality and price.
