Stakeholders in the education sector have hailed the move by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to resuscitate the free shuttle buses for school children.
A parent, Mrs Olasunkanmi Matthew who spoke with The Hope said it has not been easy to pay transport fees for her two children to get to school.
“I will be happy if government can bring it back on the road. It has not been easy. What I am doing is that I will give them transport fare in the morning so that they will not get to school late because of the distance and they will trek back home.
“I want to commend the state government for the step because it will save us the transport fare, the children will get to school early and safely,” she said.
Another parent, Mr Kola Ayodeji said it is commendable, saying that it will relieve parents of the burden of transport fare.
“It is a good thing as it will save some of us the burden of transport fare and bring relief to students who have to trek long distances, before getting to school but we pray that government will be able to sustain it for a long time,” he said.
Principal of Ejioba High School, Oba Ile, Dr Toyin Olobayo described the step as a welcome development and commended the government for the decision.
Olobayo who is also the Secretary of Parents, Teachers Association in the state said it would ameliorate the hardship of parents who have to make transport fare available to their children even in this time of economic crunch.
According to him, most parents have withdrawn their children from schools that are far from their homes and enrolled them in schools that are closer.
Also reacting to the development, Chairman of All Nigeria Confederation of Principals of Public Secondary Schools ANCOPPS in the state, Mr Ajinde Mebawondu said students were always getting late because they trek a long distance before getting to school.
He said resuscitating the free shuttle buses will assure the safety of the students and help them to be punctual in schools.
It would be recalled that the Shuttle Buses Scheme was aborted last year after the nationwide #EndSars protest in which many Buses belonging to the state government were completely burnt by irate protesters.
