Detectives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad from Abuja have arrested six armed robbers suspected to have been involved in bank robberies in Ondo state.
Police sources disclosed to The Hope Metro that three of the arrested suspects have confessed to have been involved in various bank robbery attacks in the state in recent time.
The suspects, according to the police First Information Report (FIR), were nabbed at various hideouts by detectives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) led by a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Abba Kyari from Force Headquarters in Abuja.
It would be recalled that shortly after the recent robbery attacks on First Bank and Polaris Bank in Ile-Oluji, where five persons including two policemen lost their lives, the police high command, reportedly deployed about two teams of the SARS operatives to Ondo State with the mandate to fish out and bring the perpetrators of the heinous crime to justice.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Femi Joseph, who confirmed the arrest of the suspected bandits, said the suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and that they have confessed to have been involved in some robbery incidents in the state.
His words, ” I can confirm to you that we have arrested about six suspected armed robbers but I cannot confirm whether they were the same set of bandits that recently robbed the Ile-Oluji banks.
”They are undergoing intensive interrogation and they have made useful statements that will assist the police in arresting other fleeing members of the gang.
”I can assure you that as soon as the police concludes their investigation the involvement of the suspects would be made public and they would be consequently charged to court for prosecution.
The suspects, according to the police spokesman are currently being detained at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), while investigation continues.
