Six students of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, were reportedly injured on Thursday morning, following the sudden fall of the roof of Amphitheater of the Oduduwa hall of the institution.
The Hope Metro gathered that the incident which happened in the early hours of the day was caused by a whirlwind which destroyed some parts of the roof of the Amphitheatre during SER 001 class scheduled to hold from 8am to 9am.
Some of the victims were reported to be completely unconscious while some sustained injuries and are currently being attended to at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC),
The sad development which has paralysed academic activities of the institution, forced many lecturers to declare the day work-free for students to sympathize with the affected students.
Meanwhile, the management of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-ife, Osun State, on Thursday, sealed off the amphitheater of the Oduduwa hall of the institution until further notice, following the incident.
Reacting to the incident, the management, through a statement made available to newsmen stated:“The torrential rainfall of early Thursday morning, accompanied with a whirlwind, affected the ceiling of the Amphitheatre as it fell off and injured a few of the students.
“The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Simeon Bamire led other principal officers to the Medical and Health Centre of the University, and ensured that the injured students were given adequate medical attention. ”
According to him,” the Vice-Chancellor also followed two other students, whose cases demanded more medical attention to the University Teaching Hospital Complex, where the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Professor John Okeniyi, supervised the proceedings”.
The Vice-Chancellor has, however, appealed for calm and urged students and staff to go about their academic and administrative activities without any form of untoward action.
Meanwhile, the management of the University has sealed off the amphitheatre, the venue of the unfortunate incident, until further notice.
