SON destroys substandard goods in Akure

Fake and substandard goods worth several million of naira were yesterday destroyed by the Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON) yesterday in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The goods destroyed are: cassava flour, coca-cola, transmission fluids, tyres cylinders LPG popularly refers as cooking cylinders and automobile spare parts.

Destroying the goods, state coordinator of SON, Mr Gabriel Agafie said the substandard and expired products were threats and injurious to human health.

He called on Nigerians to always look at the labelling to check the certification and expiry date of products before buying such.

Agafie advised the general public to look out for the MANCAP logo for manufactured products for Nigeria use and the SON logo for Nigerian products produced for foreign countries.

This, he noted showed that the products have fulfilled the Nigeria Industrial Standard (NIS) requirements.

He warned producers and marketers who presumed that it is business as usual to be ready to face the wrath of the law.

The Principal Legal Officer of the organisation at the national headquarters, Mr Nanjwan Karimu Damap quoted section 29 and 47 of the SON act which empowers the organisation to destroy such items and prevent unsuspecting Nigerians from the dangers such products can cause them.
