Speed up renovation of Akure Stadium, SWAN urges Ondo govt

By Femi Atolagbe

The Ondo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has reiterated its call for the state government to expedite the renovation of the Akure Township Stadium.

In a communiqué issued at the end of its congress, held at the Ondo State Sports Complex, SWAN emphasised that a standard, well-maintained stadium is crucial for hosting local and national sporting events, as well as for overall sports development.

The congress called for adequate and continuous preparation of Ondo State athletes ahead of the next National Sports Festival.

It also urged the government and relevant authorities to ensure early camping, proper training, and sufficient motivation to enhance the athletes’ performance at the event.

While congratulating Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa and his deputy, Dr Olayide Adelami, on their inauguration, the congress urged them to prioritise youth and sports development in the state.

It highlighted the role of sports in youth engagement, job creation, and social cohesion.

The sports writers also called for deliberate policies and investments to improve sports infrastructure, grassroots development, and athletes’ welfare.

Additionally, SWAN congratulated the Ondo State Football Association on the successful conduct of its recent elections, commending the association for a transparent and peaceful process that reflects a collective commitment to football development in the state.

According to the communiqué, “The congress emphasises the need for all stakeholders to rally around Sunshine Stars FC to ensure the club retains its place in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).”

Relegation, it warned, could negatively impact football development in the state.

It, therefore, called for maximum support from the government, the private sector, and football enthusiasts.

“SWAN also reaffirms its commitment to promoting sports development in Ondo State and assures continued collaboration with all stakeholders to advance the sector.”
