Sports lovers in Ondo North District have condemned the recent abduction of some female footballers in Edo state by unknown gunmen, describing the development as very unpatriotic, retrogressive wicked and callous.
They posited that it is sad that this is happening at a time when Nigeria is performing well in the global arena through the efforts of sports women.
According to them, the act can lower the enthusiasm for sports by youths who see sports as an escape route from joblessness and the high rate of unemployment in the country.
Chief Teddy Ojuolape from Ikare Akoko, called on government to always give adequate security and protection to sports men and women as well as heroes and heroines in the field of sports.
Ojuolape wondered why miscreants should abduct sports people not to talk of sports women.
Similarly, Alhaji Kareem Olowosaudi, an Owo based sports lover, want government to do the needful to make sure sports people and indeed Nigerians, are safe from kidnappers.
Olowosaudi, however appealed to people, especially youths, who are interested in sports, especially football, not to be deterred by the development.
The duo called for the release of the girls unconditionally without payment of ransom.
