Stakeholders seek women equality in politics

Stakeholders have canvassed for gender balance in Nigeria politics.

In separate interviews with The Hope, they noted that the 35 percent affirmative action stipulated for women in political representation should be followed.

While saying politics in the past was largely seen as exclusive for men, they affirmed that in recent times, the narrative has  changed with more political relevance .

A political analyst, Dr Bunmi Boboye posited that women are faring well now in the political space and have impacted politically aside from playing critical role of being the fulcrum of the family.

According to her, women are saddled with various obligations, ranging from being a wife to a mother and domestic roles,  saying that when women go into politics, she is seen as planning to abandon her core responsibilities  especially because politics is largely seen as an avenue to amass wealth.

She maintained that women emancipation in politics will go a long way to ensure gender balance and fasttrack development in the society.

Also, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development who is also a women advocate ,Dr Adebunmi Osadahun  appealed to political leadership at all levels to give women more chances.

The Special Adviser on Gender, Mrs  Olamide Falana also said more women should be considered for elective positions in future elections and also for appointments.

A female politician and the former Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Princess Olawunmi Orvoworiole said women should rise and take up leadership roles regardless of the odds against them and drive societal development.
