Stakeholders in the education sector have been called upon to support the government in it’s quest to take education to its enviable height in Ondo state.
In an interview with The Hope, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Rev Akin Asaniyan stated that stakeholders like Parents Teachers Association (PTA), Old Students Associations and communities should assist the government because they are the owners of the schools.
He said that government alone cannot fund education if quality education is to be achieved.
” Government alone cannot fund education, that was one of the topics we actually deliberated upon. The UBE act says that education shall be free to some level and the question is how do we guarantee quality education knowing quite well that education is capital intensive, it requires money and so how do we get the resources”, he stated.
Speaking on the just concluded statutory meeting of the National Council on Education at Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), where the issue of funding in education was discussed, the Perm Sec said a state of emergency has been declared in this regard.
“You know the education sector has the problem of funding as things are not as they were in the past and a state of emergency has been declared in the sector and so there is the need for us to look critically and identify the gaps and how to galvanise necessary economic support for the sector” he said.
He added that many resolutions that were reached at the meeting and are awaiting ratification to become laws will soon be unveiled.
