Stop patronising quacks, NSE warns

By Femi Atolagbe
The Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Akure chapter,   Mrs Christianah Ijagbemi,  has warned the public to stop patronising quacks in their building projects.

Ijagbemi gave the warning during a press conference held at the society’s secretariat in Akure  to kick-start the 40th year anniversary and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the society, tagged : “Sustainable Approach to Infrastructural Development”.

She said patronage of quack is  responsible for the majority of building collapse  in the country.

The chairman stressed that  the menace of  building collapse begins with the individuals,  adding that people  should  patronise competent engineers to design their  buildings.

She added that  there is a section of the COREN law that allows for the trial of any culprit.

She said efforts are being put in place to educate the public on who to contact when they want to build their  houses saying the government should also ensure that the rules regulating  building be followed  to the letter .

She commended the current government in the area of infrastructural development and  appealed to the government to encourage the Ondo State based Engineers  in terms of patronage.

Ijagbemi also sought the attention of the government to see the need for  training and retraining of Engineers in the  public service to further enhance their capability.

Her words, “we are calling on the government at all levels to be  appointing  our members as head of works ministry, both in the state and at the federal level.

Engineers should show more  interest in politics so that we can be rubbing shoulders with our colleagues from other professions.”
