Stop patronising quacks, NSE warns

The Chairman, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Akure chapter, Mrs Christianah Ijagbemi, has warned the public to stop patronising quacks in their building projects.
Ijagbemi gave the warning during a press conference held at the society’s secretariat in Akure to kick-start the 40th year anniversary and Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the society, tagged : “Sustainable Approach to Infrastructural Development”.
She said patronage of quack is responsible for the majority of building collapse in the country.
The chairman stressed that the menace of building collapse begins with the individuals, adding that people should patronise competent engineers to design their buildings.
She added that there is a section of the COREN law that allows for the trial of any culprit.
She said efforts are being put in place to educate the public on who to contact when they want to build their houses saying the government should also ensure that the rules regulating building be followed to the letter .
She commended the current government in the area of infrastructural development and appealed to the government to encourage the Ondo State based Engineers in terms of patronage.
Ijagbemi also sought the attention of the government to see the need for training and retraining of Engineers in the public service to further enhance their capability.
Her words, “we are calling on the government at all levels to be appointing our members as head of works ministry, both in the state and at the federal level.
Engineers should show more interest in politics so that we can be rubbing shoulders with our colleagues from other professions.”
