Stray bullet kills two in Ekiti

Pandemonium broke out in Ado-Ekiti capital of Ekiti State on Tuesday, when a police officer attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Ekiti State Police Command, reportedly fired a bullet and killed two persons.

The incident which had thrown the whole area into serious mourning, occurred in Omisanjana street at about 7:30pm on Tuesday at a popular Petrol Station which also houses a Super Market in the area.

An eyewitness told Journalists in Ado-Ekiti, that the police had chased some internal fraudsters believed to be suspected yahoo boys who drove on a Lexus car to the area to affect some arrest.

It was reliably gathered that the police who are on a branded RRS vehicle stormed the area and starting shooting sporadically, the development later resulted to panic.

The police was said to have arrested the suspected yahoo boys, before the irate youths numbering about 50 in the street suddenly emerged from the street chanting war song and resisting the arrest of the suspected yahoo boys.

The policemen were reportedly shot in the course of the melee, while two persons among the irate youths reportedly died instantly.

Reacting to the development, through a press release on behalf of the Commissioner of Police and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Ekiti State Command, Mr Sunday Abutu, confirmed the death of two persons.

Said the officer responsible for the shooting has been disarmed, arrested, detained and shall be made to face disciplinary action immediately.

While the command is already in touch with the two families of the deceased and condoles with them and assured them that discreet investigation has commenced and justice shall prevail.
