Subscribers lament as Cable TV providers hike prices again

Subscribers of cable television services in Nigeria have reacted to the incessant hike in subscription fees by providers.
Those who spoke in Akure, the Ondo State capital, said that the epileptic power supply, coupled with economic hardships, has already made life difficult, noting that the latest hike will only worsen the situation.
A leading cable TV service provider, in a notice sent to customers, announced an increase in subscription fees, which will take effect from March 2025.
The announcement detailed a tariff adjustment across its packages, leading to price increases that the company claimed were necessary to ensure the sustainability of its operations and continued investment in Nigeria’s creative and entertainment sector.
This adjustment follows a similar price hike in May 2024, which the company attributed to inflation and rising operational costs in Nigeria.
However, the latest increase has triggered widespread criticism from subscribers. Mr. Rotimi Adebayo expressed frustration over frequent price hikes, noting that there has been no improvement in service delivery.
Another subscriber, Adenike Akinfolarin, called for a boycott of the service, suggesting that more subscribers should explore alternatives, especially local channels available in the state.
On their part, some football enthusiasts, including Samuel Ikukoyi, admitted that they would always find a way to renew their subscriptions due to their love for live football matches.
Subscribers have called on the federal government to intervene by enforcing stronger consumer protection measures and creating a more business-friendly environment.
While many acknowledged that cable TV has significantly contributed to the Nigerian film and music industries, they expressed hope that the government would introduce price regulations to protect consumers from further hikes.
