The officials of Ondo State Office of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) , have raided markets in Akure and Ondo towns leading  to the discoveries of several rolls of substandard,  and unregistered electrical cables from the markets.

The exercise was in line with the organization’s mandate as enshrined in the SON Act 2015 and a directive from the headquarters.

The State coordinator of SON, Mr. Agafie Gabriel made this known in a chat with The Hope In Akure, the state capital.

Agafie said SON has zero tolerance to fake and substandard products in the country.

According to him, Ondo State cannot be turned into a dumping ground for substandard products which he said constitute economic sabotage as well as endanger the health and safety of the end users.

His words: “During the exercise which was carried out within two cities in the state (Akure and Ondo), different brands of substandard and unregistered cables were uncovered for failing to comply with  standards, while some were put on hold in the sellers’ shops pending test results from the laboratory”.

Disclosing that the exercise is a continuous one, Agafie said the raid was conducted by a combined team of SON and law enforcement agents led by him.

He urged stakeholders, particularly sellers and consumers to patronize only products that are certified or registered by SON to avoid any form of embarrassment. While disclosing that most of the cables evacuated were imported from China, Agafie stated that the  cables will be sent to SON laboratory for further analysis.
