Sunshine flickers win maiden edition of late Sofolahan 5- aside hockey competition

Sunshine Flickers yesterday defeated Ogun team to emerge winners of first edition of late Coach Olumuyiwa Sofolahan 5- aside indoor hockey competition.

Sunshine flickers beat Ogun 2-1 in the final of the ceremonial competition organised by the state’s hockey association in collaboration with their national body to mark one year demise of the late Coach.

While Ogun settled for second position, Ekiti State displaced Ondo Flickers to go home with 3rd place prize .

The encounter between Ekiti and Ondo side had earlier ended 1-1 in regulation time before the Fountain of Knowledge side defeated 3-2 in  penalties shootouts.

In a chat with newsmen in Akure, the state capital, the eldest son of the late Coach, Opeyemi Shofolahan thanked the organisers and the management of the state sports council for remembering his father.

He said the competition was a surprise package for the family, we are most thankful to all the participating visiting teams from Ogun, Osun and Ekiti states,I wish them safe trip back to their various destinations and pray for brighter future for them in their carreer.

The Head coach of Ondo State Hockey team, Mark Oloruntola said the  competition will not be a one off event, saying it will be organised every year in November to remember our late Coach.

He said Olumuyiwa Shofolahan was a very good coach while alive , so we can’t afford not to be organising posthumous competition to honour him.

Oloruntola commended all the athletes for their display of professionalism through the three days event , urging them to take discipline as their watchword.

He said: “Without discipline, no athletes can go far, I will reiterate it, that the athletes should be disciplined and focus on their career,” he said .

Cash prizes were later presented to the winners.
