Sunshine Stars FC unimpressive form continued as there was nothing to separate the Akure Landlords and Akwa United in an NPFL matchday 19 encounter decided at the Agege Township Stadium, Lagos.
League Management Company (LMC) had earlier banished Sunshine Stars to Agege Township Stadium for two home matches after one of their officials was alleged to have been involved in an un-sportsmanship behavior.
After played two of their home matches away from Akure, all hands are on deck to welcome the team back to Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure.
The match between Sunshine Stars and Akwa United was a cagey encounter from the start, the Owena Whales had a glimse of chance inside the first 10 minutes, with Kehinde Adeyemi heading Abe Sunday’s freekick into the waiting hands of the Akwa United goalkeeper.
Twenty-four minutes into the game, Ayo Adejubu was forced off with a knock from an ariel duel and was replaced by Abiodun Joseph.
Tope Akande almost broke the deadlock in the 37th minute, but his powerful header was cleared off the line; two minutes after Waheed Adebayo had fired wide from a chest down tee up from Sadeeq Yusuf.
Uche Okafor was called into the action in the 39th minutes, saving a squre ball from Udoh after the striker had worked his way behind the Sunshine Stars defence.
Three minutes before the break, Sadeeq Yusuf found the back of the net but his effort was chalked off for an offside. The scoreborad remains goalless at halftime.
The second half was all orange traffic, as Sunshine Stars dominated and created a number of chances.
In the space of six minutes, Frederick Obomate was twice unlucky against the Akwa United goalkeeper, first missing a one-on-one before drawing a save from the goalkeeper with a low drive shot.
Once again, Uche Okafor stood in the way of Akwa United with a save out of the blues, as the visitors aimed to break against the run of play in the 59th minute.
In the 82nd minute, debutant, Jide Jimoh nearly benefited from a sloppy clearance by the Akwa United goalkeeper, but the ball went off target from his surge on the goalkeeper’s miscue.
Six minutes later, the lanky striker failed to turn home a rebound, after the goalkeeper spilled Waheed Adebayo’s shot.
Jide’s missed chance was the last roll of the dice on both sides. A share of spoils as Sunshine Stars end the two-game spell in Lagos going into the mid-season break.
