Sunshine Stars thrash Bayelsa United in league opener
Sunshine Stars Football Club of Akure started the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season with a 3-0 win over Bayelsa United.
The match played on Sunday at the Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode had Sunshine Stars’ Forward, Seidu Salisu tapping into the net from winger, Promise Awosanmi’s square play in the 44th minute to go into the half 1-0.
At the resumption of second half, Awosanmi made it 2-0 for the home side from a free kick on the right side of the right side of the pitch in the 54th minute.
One of the substitutes, Stephen Chuckwudi, made it 3-0 in the 90th minute with a clinical finish that put the icing on the cake.
In his post match interview, Sunshine Stars’ Head Coach, Kennedy Boboye said he was happy with the win despite most of the players being newly recruits.
Boboye, when asked his aim for the season, said every team manager’s aim is to play continental football.
“We are not there yet, we are just trying to play the way we did in training sessions, we still have more to do,” he said.
The Head Coach of Bayelsa United, Ladan Bosso said the game had come and gone and had identified the areas to improve on.
Bosso said 70 per cent of the players were just recruited and would need to find a way to quickly blend them in for better results.
