By Femi Atolagbe

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Monday unveiled Éric Sékou Chelle as the new Head Coach of the Super Eagles.

During the ceremony at the Media Conference Room of the MKO Abiola National Stadium, NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau called for nationwide support for Chelle, pledging the NFF’s full backing to ensure the coach’s success.

Gusau, impressed by Chelle’s confidence and commitment during their interactions, said, “I see in the new Head Coach the right spirit and attitude. His passion for this job is a huge motivation. We believe he will lead the Super Eagles to new heights in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series.”

Chelle has signed a two-year contract with an option for an additional year if he qualifies the team for the World Cup. He will be assisted by three coaches and will work with the existing technical crew to enhance the Super Eagles’ performance.

Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), affirmed the NSC’s satisfaction with Chelle’s recruitment, stating, “Football unites Nigerians, and we are committed to supporting the NFF in providing the coach with a conducive atmosphere to succeed. The Government will play its part by supporting the NFF with necessary resources.”

The Franco-Malian tactician, who earned five caps as a player for Mali and played for clubs like Valenciennes and Lens, expressed his delight at the appointment.

“Coaching the Super Eagles is an amazing job, and I do not take it for granted. I understand Nigerians’ high expectations, and I will work diligently to achieve the goal of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Football is about scoring goals, so I favour an attacking style of play,” he said.

Chelle’s appointment adds to the list of Super Eagles’ coaches over the years, which includes legendary names such as Clemens Westerhof, Stephen Keshi, and Gernot Rohr. He succeeds José Peseiro and Finidi George, with a mandate to restore the Super Eagles’ dominance in African football.
