Philanthropists and public spirited individuals in Ondo state have been urged to support the education of brilliant, but indigent students.
Some principals who spoke at separate interviews with The Hope in Ondo town, when Nigeria Women of Journalists NAWOJ visited the schools to compile lists of indigent students to be awarded scholarship by the association appealed to members of the public to assist indigent students in the state.
The Principal of Saint Monica’s Girls Grammar school Ondo, Mrs Adeola Akinseloyin urged philanthropists and well meaning Nigerians to assist indigent students facing economic challenges to advance in their studies.
Akinseloyin noted that most of the brilliant students are from very poor backgrounds and cannot afford to pay school fees and purchase needed learning materials.
She hinted that she had to look out for friends and old students of the school to assist the children in whatever capacity they could.
She declared that government alone cannot cater for the students, considering the population of the schools across the state, hence the need for people’s assistance.
The Principal of Saint James Secondary school also in Ondo, Dr. Adebayo Famakinwa expressed dissatisfaction that a lot of indigent students are facing challenges in buying learning materials which he said makes it a herculean task for the teachers to educate the students.
Famakinwa, disclosed that he had to fix some of the school’s facilities which are dilapidated beyond control to make learning a bit conducive.
He called on all stakeholders to give attention to deplorable situation and challenges facing the students across the nation and Ondo state in particular.
