Suspected cult members arrested in Ekiti

Operatives of the  Ekiti State Police Command have arrested six persons suspected to be notorious members of two cult groups, Eiye and Ayee confratanity.

The police commissioner in the state, Mr Amba Azuquo, said the suspects, Alabi Kayode, 26; Ibukun Babatunde, 28; Ajewole Sogo , 21;  Lekan Alabi ,26, and Adeyemi Adewale ,32, were nabbed in various parts of the state, during a routine operation recently carried out by the command.

The police boss said four of the suspects were arrested recently in Ikere Ekiti, when two rival cult groups (Eiye and Aye), clashed at Ijoka area of the town.

The bloody clash, according to him, claimed the lives of two persons identified  as Adebayo Tomilola and Ajayi Agbon, who were  killed by the suspected cult groups.

“On same day, another clash erupted between two rival cult groups in the community, where a brutal machete injury was inflicted on one Alabi Kayode, who is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital in the state,” he added.

On how the suspects were arrested, Azuquo, disclosed that four of them were apprehended following a tip-off, afterwhich the police operatives in the state command rounded them up and  some suspects, who made confessional statements, admitting that they belong to “Aye and Eiye cult groups.

He added that one other person was arrested while on transit at a police pin down point along Ilawe road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

The Hope Metro learnt that when the suspect was searched, he was  in possession of one  axe, and  later confessed to the police being member of “Eiye” confraternity group.

Azuquo said further investigations revealed that the arrested suspects had earlier been involved in series of crimes which include, armed robbery, burglary and unlawful possession of firearms among others.

Items recovered from the suspects according to the police include, one battle axe, assorted charms and two cutlasses.

He said investigation has begun on the matter, while the suspects would be arraigned in court as soon as investigation is completed.
