The Ondo State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) on Saturday locked horns with members of Anglican Youth Fellowship (AYF), Akure Diocese to mark one year memorial of a broadcaster Olubunmi Afuye.
Afuye was a victim of Ilara-Mokin bank robbery that claimed his life and two others, a year ago.
The novelty match, which held at the Ondo State Sports Complex in Akure, was graced by his family members, friends, colleagues, fans and football lovers.
The Anglican Youths showed they were apparently fit and sharper than the sportswriters on the field, and made their mark with the first goal of the game before half time.
Ondo SWAN came out better in the second half, creating different chances to level up but the game was taken beyond them with two more goals by the Anglicans to take make it 3-0 scoreline
The President of Anglican Youths Fellowship, Akure Diocese, Festus Oni, revealed that plans were underway to create a scholarship fund that will impact the lives of students within and outside the diocese.
Representative of the NUJ, Ondo State Council, Mr. Segun Giwa appreciated AYF’s gesture, with a pledge that NUJ will continue to do everything in its power to keep late Afuye’s memory alive.
Also speaking, the Chairman of SWAN in Ondo State, Wahab Bankole reassured that the body would continue to remember the impacts of its late Financial Secretary, adding that it would also support the course of the Anglican Youths Fellowship to immortalize him.
Reacting, wife of the deceased, Mrs. Afuye appreciated AYF and Ondo SWAN for the befitting memorial, describing the remembrance as a soul lifting event that would give the family the drive to carry on the legacies of her late husband.
Late Olubunmi Afuye before his demise was the financial secretary of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria, Ondo State chapter, as well as a one time President of the Anglican Youths Fellowship, Akure Diocese.
