Sympathizers besiege Adegbenro’s residence

By Saheed Ibrahiim

Tears rolled uncontrollably yesterday at the Odo-Ikoyi residence of the Health Commissioner as the news of his death was confirmed.
Many of the residents wept openly while others rolled on the ground in shock and disbelieve over the tragic incident.
Some of the sympathizers who doubled as party members of the APC testified to the kindness and human nature of the departed commissioner.
The sympathizers who stood in groups of twos and threes said “he was a very kind man, our benefactor has gone, who will give us free medical treatment again” was the common refrain on the lips of the mourners.
“My benefactor, my helper, so you have gone like that. This world is not a good place”. Those were the words of one of the women weeping uncontrollably at his residence.
Another sympathiser, who narrated how the late commissioner saved her life, her husband and baby 32 years ago lamented thus, “Why didn’t God pick the wicked and not my benefactor. Adegbenro, you are not supposed to die because your death may lead to the death of many people. You have saved so many lives. You are not supposed to die. My benefactor is gone, Adegbenro is gone”
None of his family members at his residence was able to speak with The Hope due to the shock of his death.
The Chief Imam of his mosque, Imam Abdulkareem Suleiman, who spoke with The Hope, expressed shock at the commissioner’s death.
“From Allah we cometh and to him we shall return. Everyone will surely die but what is painful about his death is that he was a very good man. I have been the Imam of his mosque for the past 22 years and I have never seen any bad thing he did. He always treated people for free. He was a kind person”, he said.
As regards his burial arrangement, Imam Suleiman said the family would decide how the process would be undertaken, adding that it is permissible in Islam to delay the burial of a Muslim due to unforeseen circumstances like that of the situation surrounding the death of the late commissioner.
One of his family friends, who called late Adegbenro his benefactor and father, Alhaji, AbdulKabir Ademola described him as a benefactor and a God-sent to the people.
“He was a good man. Ever since we have been together for many years, I have not seen him do any bad. He was someone who wanted to uplift others. May God forgive him any sin he might have committed”, he said with tears dropping from his eyes
