Tackle power supply, address OSBC staff appointment, Osun NUJ tells govt

By Michael Ofulue, Osogbo

The Osun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has commended Governor Ademola Adeleke for the various ongoing infrastructure projects across the state.

In a communiqué issued after its February congress at the NUJ Press Centre in Osogbo, the union described the projects as a significant boost to the state’s economy.

The NUJ also praised Adeleke’s people-centred governance, highlighting initiatives such as free health insurance for pensioners, the elderly, and Persons Living with Disabilities (PWDs), which it said had alleviated the suffering of many residents.

Presided over by the Chairman of the Osun NUJ, Comrade Wasiu Ajadosu, the congress urged the governor to address the delay in implementing the approved appointment of 66 freelance staff of the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC). The appointments, approved in May 2024, have yet to be formalised as permanent employment as of February 2025.

The congress called on Adeleke to investigate the failure to execute his directive on the full employment of the affected OSBC freelance staff.

Additionally, the NUJ expressed concerns over the state government’s unfulfilled promise of delivering a union bus to the Osun NUJ Council, urging the administration to honour its commitment.

The union also commended the governor for implementing a new minimum wage for workers in the state, describing it as a step towards improving workers’ welfare.

Addressing national issues, the congress urged the federal government, under President Bola Tinubu, to tackle the country’s persistent power supply challenges. It called for an efficient electricity system that ensures consumers receive value for their money.

The NUJ further appealed to residents of Ilobu and Ifon-Osun to cooperate with the reconciliation committee working to restore peace and ensure harmonious coexistence in the area.

The February congress, the first of the year, commenced with prayers committing the union’s activities to God and was attended by journalists from various media organisations across the state.
