Upcoming artiste and a music producer, Ayobola lge popularly known as “AY POLY” said taking alcohol is not a sin, but drinking to stupor is a sin.
The Osun-born artists made this known during an interview with Friday Extravaganza. Excerpts.
How long have you been involved in song production?
Over a decade now. It’s not everything you talk about. That I didn’t make statements doesn’t mean I have not been there. I have been trying to find the right time to strike a point. When the time was right, I worked hard and God honoured it.
How beneficial is your experience in song production and recording as an artiste?
It has helped in a way, but at the same time, it may not really be the best because you can be wrong too. There are times that you don’t really expect much from a song and it end up surprising you.
What makes you unique?
It is always good for an artiste to be relevant. Here, I am talking about the African Child. Once an artiste is relevant, it is easy to find your place every time. That’s why I am still relevant till now. I think that my voice and smile also add to the things that stand me out.
What is the greatest sacrifice you’ve made for your music career?
I have invested money that I should invest for tomorrow; I’ve invested time I should spend to build relationships with loved ones on this thing called music.
Why do some good songs are not get to be popular even though they are played on radio?
There are different classifications of songs. There are songs that we call radio hits. They are songs that you will not buy with your money on an ordinary day. There are also TV or media hits. But then, there are songs that you listen to and they stay with you and that’s why you will always want to listen to it all over again. So, you buy it.
Generally, what’s the message of your music?
It is love. I like to talk about love in so many different ways. I do inspirational songs too. I try to preach inspiration and encouragement in all my songs.
In your own opinion, is taking alcohol a sin?
Taking alcohol is not a sin, but drinking to stupor is a sin.
Which musicians did you grow up listening to?
Michael Jackson, Patra, Eminem, Dr. Dre and Wizkid.
Did they have any significant influence on the kind of music you make now?
I didn’t copy their style but their ways of life, the reason they did what they did. So, they have really influenced me in that area.
What has stardom taught you?
Stardom has taught me humility, discipline and to keep my circle very small because the walls have ears.
Considering how long you’ve been doing music, how would you describe your career success so far?
It’s been great because I have invested every penny that came in.
Was there a time you were frustrated and tempted to quit music because you weren’t getting the desired results?
Sure, I was tempted to quit everyday. Everybody in the music industry once had that feeling of quitting but passion for the music has been the drive.
What does music mean to you?
Music means everything to me. What has brought this conversation right now is music. I don’t pretend about it. It’s the desire of every man to see great things happening around him. Years to come, I want God to have enlarged my coast and taken my career beyond my imagination.
