Tasking Ondo’s New LG Chairmen with Probity, Compassion

With Oludare Marindotin
The recently concluded local government elections in Ondo State have ushered in a new set of leaders charged with the responsibility of steering grassroots governance in the state.
While we celebrate the peaceful and successful conduct of the elections, it is crucial to remind the newly elected local government chairmen of the immense expectations placed on their shoulders.
Governance at the local level is not merely about managing resources but about transforming lives. It requires probity, compassion, and a deep sense of service to the people.
Local government is the closest tier of governance to the people, and as such, it holds the greatest potential for directly impacting their lives. However, this proximity comes with heightened responsibility.
Despite the country’s continued struggle for full local government autonomy, the recent improvements in financial allocations to local governments offer a rare opportunity to effect significant change. This newfound financial liquidity must not be squandered or taken for granted. Instead, it should be utilised judiciously to address the pressing needs of the people.
The essence of governance lies in the people it serves. Chairmen must adopt a people-oriented approach, ensuring that policies and projects reflect the genuine aspirations of their constituents. The public must feel the tangible effects of government presence in their communities—be it through improved education, healthcare, infrastructure, or economic empowerment programmes. Only by prioritising the people can real growth and development be achieved.
The local government leaders must be guided by vision and purpose. Education must be a priority as it is the bedrock of development. Chairmen should focus on building and equipping schools, training teachers, and creating an environment that fosters learning. A well-educated populace is key to achieving sustainable growth.
Basic amenities such as clean water, sanitation, healthcare, and security must not be overlooked. Chairmen must invest in these areas, ensuring that the dividends of democracy reach every household. A collaborative approach with the state government under Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is essential. By working complementarily with the governor and leveraging state resources, local governments can amplify their impact and accelerate development. Together with the state and federal governments, they can usher in a new era of progress for Ondo State.
To gain the trust of the people, chairmen must uphold the highest standards of accountability. Every naira spent must be justified, and projects must be executed with transparency and integrity. They must remember the fierce battle that brought about this new era of local government vibrancy. The Supreme Court ruling that emphasised the importance of this tier of government should not be a mere historical milestone. It must be a clarion call for exceptional performance. This is their chance to justify the sacrifices made and the vision that led to the establishment of this new dispensation.
Real transformation must begin at the grassroots. Chairmen need to actively engage with their constituents, listening to their concerns and incorporating their feedback into governance. Programmes that empower the youth, women, and marginalised groups should take centre stage. By building trust and fostering inclusivity, they can harness the collective strength of the community to drive development.
The local government is not just an administrative unit; it is the lifeline of democracy. It must function with affection and care, reflecting the hopes and aspirations of the people it serves. The new chairmen must rise to this challenge with probity and compassion, setting a standard for grassroots governance that the nation can emulate. Their performance will not only shape the future of Ondo State but also contribute to the broader narrative of Nigeria’s potential as a truly great nation.
By putting the people first and working in synergy with Governor Aiyedatiwa, they have the opportunity to make history. Let this era be one of renewal, growth, and a steadfast commitment to the people of Ondo State.
The road ahead is daunting, but the promise of a brighter tomorrow makes the journey worthwhile.
