Tasks Before New Ondo Commissioners

FOURTEEN newly appointed Commissioners, seven Special Advisers and a Director-General in Ondo State took the oath of office in Akure on Monday thus signaling the complete composition of the State Executive Council of the government led by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu. Only four ministries had been run by commissioners since the inception of Akeredolu’s second term in February this year. The appointment of new commissioners came at a trying time and period that could be described as one of the most challenging in the history of the nation and our dear state.

IT is believed that the Mr. Governor has consciously used his discretion in appointing those he feels are competent enough to make the needed impact in whatever ministry they are placed to oversee just as the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Mr Samuel Aderoboye while presenting the report of the selection committee informed the House that the 14 nominees had been screened and found competent to serve as commissioners in the State.

NO doubt, their various offices cannot but be accompanied with challenges but the new cabinet members must do all within their power to prove their competency in their various ministries upon their assumption of duty.

OBVIOUSLY tasks awaiting these commissioners are numerous as could be seen across ministries in the state. The incoming commissioner for health for instance will be assuming office at such a critical time when the new COVID-19 B.1.1.529 lineage, popularly known as the Omicron variant has just emerged and spreading rapidly.

AS at December 7, report has it that three additional cases have been discovered with persons having travel history from South Africa bringing the total number of confirmed cases in the country to six. The Health Commissioner and his team must take up this as a challenge and do everything possible in collaboration with other stakeholders in ensuring the outbreak of this new variant is prevented from spreading to Ondo State.

IN the same vein, cultism, hooliganism, bullying and other social vices have been on the increase in recent times among youths most especially in secondary schools. The most recent occurrence is the death of Sylvester Oromoni Jr the Dowen college student who was bullied and brutally murdered by cultists for his refusal to be initiated into a cult group.

THE incoming commissioner for education will serve the state right and prove his/her competency in the position by working with all the security aparati available in our state to ensure that the menace of cultism and other vices is nipped in the bud across all secondary schools in the state.

ASIDE the above mentioned few, the list of situations and challenges demanding urgent and immediate attention of the commissioners upon assumption of duties at their various ministries goes on as each of the ministries has its own peculiarities. However, there is the need for synergy among all as no ministry is an island to itself; they must all work hand in glove with the civil servants and ensure that each ministry contributes to the development and progress of the state.

EACH commissioner must relate with their communities, know what they want and ensure that all and sundry enjoy the dividends of democracy. They must not see this as an opportunity to amass illicit wealth while feeding fat on the limited resources of the state but rather see their appointment as a clarion call and an opportunity to contribute their own quota to the development of the state adding significant value and not just playing politics.
CAPACITY development for youths which will facilitate reduction in unemployment rate should not be left for the ministry of youths and sports alone, all the commissioners should work as a team in ensuring that unemployment among youths become a thing of the past.. The state government should as well give the appointees the needed education and orientation on the goals and objectives of the Akeredolu’s administration as this will better equip them towards enhancing the implementation of these plans.
