Tax reform bill ‘ll protect poor Nigerians– FG

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the Tax Reform Bill currently before the National Assembly will not only simplify tax administration but also shield low-income earners from excessive tax burdens.

This was disclosed by the Director-General of the National Orientation Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, during a press briefing in Osogbo.

The event, held at the agency’s office, aimed to sensitise the public about the bill’s potential impact on the economy.

Represented by the agency’s Director of Report Coordination and Improvement, Olubukola Olorunfemi, Issa-Onilu explained that the proposed reforms would address the issue of multiple taxation, which has been a major challenge in Nigeria.

“The tax reform bills comprise four separate pieces of legislation aimed at streamlining taxation and administration.

They include: the Nigeria Tax Bill, the Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Bill, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Bill,” he said.

He noted that the Nigeria Tax Bill would consolidate all existing tax laws, leading to the repeal of 11 outdated laws that currently govern tax imposition and collection.

Issa-Onilu emphasised that the reforms are designed to protect low-income earners from undue taxation.

“The government is working to stop different levels of authority from taxing people for the same thing. Those earning very little will pay little or no taxes, helping them manage their finances better,” he said.

He also highlighted the introduction of new digital systems to enhance transparency and efficiency in tax payments.

“These systems will make tax payments easier, faster, and more accountable. Tax revenue will be used to improve essential public services like schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, ensuring citizens see the benefits of their contributions,” he added.

The Director-General further stated that the reforms aim to reduce the tax burden on hardworking Nigerians while promoting a fair contribution system.

“These measures are meant to ensure that everyone pays their fair share while fostering development and improving the ease of doing business in the country,” he concluded.

The Federal Government expressed optimism that the proposed reforms would drive economic growth and ensure a more equitable tax system for all Nigerians.
