‘Technocrat can’t be Nigeria’s president’

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC and political strategist , in Ondo State, Mr. Demola Ijabiyi, has said that it would be hard for a technocrat to win election as president in the country.
He stated this in an interview with The Hope on the move by the former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo to draft the current President of the African Development Bank, Dr. Akinwumi Adesina into the 2023 presidential race.
The difficulty for a technocrat to win election, particularly into the presidential and governorship positions , he attributed it to lack of political will, structure and wherewithal to compete favourably with politicians who have been in the system.
He added that the anticipated formation of a hybrid party by the former president to weaken both the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the APC would not be feasible, because members of both major political parties would not in any circumstance leave their parties for a new political party that has no governor or lawmakers at the National Assembly.
Obasanjo, whom he described as a patriotic and a talent hunt Nigerian who always look for the best for the country had tried it before but failed, pointing out that he ( Obasanjo) was not making the move to antagonise the National Leader of the APC, Asiwaju Ahmed Tinubu or any other politician.
He stressed that the track records of Adesina based on his academic excellence qualified him as a good president , just as he noted that his spending in nature would hinder him to spend on politics.
ljabiyi further noted lack of structure, political base and the wherewithal as the major obstacle for the current president of the ADP to become the president of the country.
“It takes more than technocracy to become Nigeria president. It requires high political manoeuvres.
“Not just because you are knowledgeable, brilliant or has international connections, you must be a member of a political party that can offer you hope to win election.
“Many technocrats, highly brilliant people at the state level who want to become governors but because they are not politicians they could not make it.
“Adesina is an official spending person who is not going to be a spender like an average politician and he has not accumulated capital either legally or illegally to spend on politics,” he added.
